9.0 - Why can't we use Road tool with Desert dirt?

In 9.0 this was changed - if you place Dirt in a Desert dirt block and convert it to a Dirt road it will just change back to Desert dirt in a few minutes.

There are a few issues posted but they are all closed as "this is intentional" - anyone know why? I can understand why you can't do it with Sand but this is dirt, desert dirt roads do exist..

this is true however deserts do sometimes reclaim "dirt roads" if they aren't used i think the point of the reverting dirt roads is to push for more useful means ie stone roads etc

I think the point is to nerf the desert. Without this they are too good. They have tons of iron, lots of open flat space, and easy to build roads.

Salbris explanation is correct. The desert 'dirt' is sandy though and roads require maintenance there - you just need to keep them used (e.g. trampled) to stay.
